Testing for the UE Megaboom Charcoal Bluetooth Speaker Review
We assessed the charcoal black Megaboom Bluetooth Speaker for its build, design, features, and performance. It is compatible with both Android and Apple.
The Megaboom is IPX7 Certified, which means it is waterproof, and it is stain resistant too. Although there are a few design flaws, the Megaboom has some great features like NFC that we don’t see with all wireless speakers.
The Bluetooth range is 100 feet, which is far longer than the 30-feet capability of the Beats Pill 2.0 Portable Speaker. The Megaboom delivers good sound quality with profound bass. While there were a few dropouts, we noted that the streamed audio sounded as good at 100 feet as one foot. Overall, we think Ultimate Ear’s Bluetooth speaker, which comes with a micro USB cable and power adapter, has a reasonable price.
Primary Features of the Top 10 Bluetooth Speaker
The Megaboom is the big brother to UE’s Boom, which has been touted as being one of the best mobile Bluetooth speakers. As we will explain further in this UE Megaboom Charcoal Bluetooth speaker review, the Megaboom’s main features are:
- Waterproof (IPX7 Certified)
- 360-Degree Sound
- NFC Capability
The wireless speaker is cylindrical shaped, just over 8 inches in height, and weighs 1.93 pounds. This Megaboom review focuses on the charcoal black model. While it is larger than the BOOM, it is still portable and durable, with technical and design improvements over the previous model, including now being waterproof.
The top 10 Bluetooth speaker is covered with a rubberized material similar to the Bose SoundLink II. It has a 3.5mm auxiliary input, micro-USB socket, and dedicated buttons for power, volume, and pairing. It also has a built-in microphone and offers about 20 hours of playback on one battery charge.
Identifying the Ideal User
If you are on the go frequently, then you will appreciate this top 10 Bluetooth speaker’s grab n’ go shape. The 20-hour rechargeable battery means you can get through long playlists too.
If you are a big fan of hands-free technology, then you will like that the Megaboom can connect to the second-generation Echo Dot to provide voice control with Alexa. You can play music from iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Pandora, all through the single speaker.
We noticed a few design flaws while writing this top 10 Bluetooth speaker review. Firstly, the volume buttons run down the center of the speaker, which is an awkward placement. To alter the volume, you have to hold onto the unit and press the buttons. On the bright side, you can instead adjust the volume using your smartphone.
Also uncomfortable is using the speaker while it is in charging mode. As the USB port is on the bottom of the unit, you must put it on its side (or upside down) to listen to music and simultaneously charge it. Unfortunately, both of those positions distorts the sound. Having the charging port on the side would have eliminated this inconvenience.
What are the Megaboom’s Best Qualities?
As far as sound quality goes, the Megaboom delivers well with 360-degree audio that streams wirelessly up to 100 feet. Enjoy the unit’s rich bass, whether you are indoors or outdoors, from any angle, rather than just in front of the speaker. The ability to connect with the Echo Dot to control your speaker hands-free using Alexi is a convenient feature.
In our opinion, being waterproof and shockproof is great. If you want to listen to music at the pool or by the water at the beach, there are no worries about water ruining your new speaker. UE has covered the Megaboom with a plasma-coated finish that enables it to be not just splash resistant like the JBL Charge 2+ but has been tested to be immersible up to 1m for up to half an hour.
UE’s speaker is designed to be stain resistant too. The combination of water and stain resistance makes the Megaboom a durable speaker.

Special Features of the Top 10 Bluetooth Speaker
The portable wireless speaker has NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Being NFC capable means that you can transmit music from your smartphone to the speaker by simply touching the two devices together. There is no hassle to the pairing; NFC is easy and works quickly.
The built-in microphone is another unique feature that you will not get with the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay S3 or some other top 10 Bluetooth speakers. Take incoming calls with the wireless speaker while listening to music with a compatible Bluetooth smartphone.
The battery life indicator on the corresponding free app is nice to have to so you won’t be as likely to run out of juice. Other extra features you will get with UE’s app are the alarm clock and the “Double Up” option that lets you either connect two Megabooms or pair a Megaboom with a Boom for stereo sound.
The app also gives you four sound presets that provide different balance, providing variety in the listening experience. On a related note, you can also pair over 50 UE speakers to the mobile unit to provide even better sound quality by using UE’s PartyUp app.
UE Megaboom Charcoal Bluetooth Speaker
Concluding the UE Megaboom Charcoal Bluetooth Speaker Review
The combination of features in the Megaboom make it worthy of its mid-range price tag, in our opinion. While the portable speaker has a few flaws, our overall impression of the Megaboom is as an impressive 360-degree Bluetooth speaker and speakerphone.
The size, shape, and light weight of the UE Megaboom make it easily transportable. Its design is durable, so you can use it inside or outside, across a long wireless range. The waterproof and stain resistant Bluetooth unit has many advantages and a quality build, which is why it makes our top 10 list.
