Specs & Highlights of the SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III
This Bluetooth-streaming audio device has a transmission range up to 30 feet without wires. The device itself measures 10.08” x 1.89” x 5.18” and weighs about 3 lbs. The SoundLink III looks sleek with a thin metal profile and curved rather than blunt edges. It has a vintage look to it.
In our search for the best Bluetooth speaker, we reviewed the Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III from top to bottom. In our eyes, the biggest selling points of this Bose model are:
- Great Sound for Its Size
- Easy to Use
- Wired Option via AUX Input
Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III
As one of the top 10 Bluetooth speakers, it runs on AC or battery. It has an AUX input, four drivers, and two passive radiators. Bose has improved the battery life since its predecessor, offering 14 hours of playtime, which is almost double that of the SoundLink II (eight hours).
Pros of the Bose SoundLink III
In addition to having a long battery life, another benefit of the SoundLink III is the AUX input on the back of the unit. This feature is great for when you want to go wired or if you have something that is not compatible with Bluetooth.
When it comes to the quality of the sound, Bose does not disappoint with this model. It delivers bigger, bolder sound than its predecessors and has a huge range. We found ourselves impressed by how the sound got even better as the volume increased, rather than becoming distorted as we had worried might happen.
The clear, balanced audio is the result of the Bose speaker’s four neodymium transducers and two passive radiators. The bass performance is great too.
In terms of design, we like that the metal casing has a fingerprint-free finish so it keeps looking attractive, unlike with the silicone material of the Color SoundLink II that attracts dust seemingly daily. Silicone rubber buttons run along the top of the Bose SoundLink III unit, which are also easy to clean.
It is simple to use too. Connecting the device to your smartphone or tablet is a cinch. Within about 20 minutes of taking it out of the box, you should be playing music.
What is Missing from the Bose SoundLink III
It likely won’t appeal to those who prefer a more modern looking device rather than a retro appearance. The two-tone gray could be more exiting, in our opinion. It lacks the inventive design of the Harman Kardon SoundSticks Bluetooth Speaker System with its translucent casing and white LED glow. Not all is lost though as you can add optional accessory covers in fun colors (sold separately) to change up the look.
The Bose model also is not rugged, unlike with some of the other best Bluetooth speakers. It isn’t the best choice for taking to the pool or the beach given that it is not waterproof.
The SoundLink 3 could use a microUSB port too. When it comes to charging the best Bluetooth speaker, you will have to keep on-hand a special plug to charge the battery. This design makes it more difficult to go mobile with your Bluetooth speaker. Lastly, the Bluetooth range of 30 feet is far less than the 100-foot range you get with the UE MEGABOOM Speaker.
Assessing Top 10 Bluetooth Speakers for Likeability
Who would like or dislike the Bose SoundLink 3? The typical user of the wireless speaker is someone who puts more emphasis on top-quality sound than affordability. While the speaker costs more than the Bose Color SoundLink II, the spectrum of sound that you get with the SoundLink 3 is more than you would likely expect from a speaker of this size. The large range also means that you can listen to the unit in a range of settings.
While it is a bit clunky in size, the Bose Bluetooth speaker is slim, so it can fit into a backpack if you need to. But, there are smaller options on the market that may do better for someone looking to tow it around with them frequently.

Special features of the speaker, though, do make it very likeable. For example, you can sync up to six devices at once if they’re in range. The SoundLink III even remembers the devices you have synced before, which makes reconnecting them a breeze. Pairing devices takes only seconds. Plus, being able to buy separate covers for the unit is great when you want to alter the look of it.
Although it could be a smaller size and more modern in appearance, the SoundLink III is one of the top 10 Bluetooth speakers because of its dynamic sound, which you will not get with every speaker on the market. The excellent sound you get in various scenarios justifies the price tag being higher than some competitors are and makes it a speaker that we would use repeatedly.
In our experience, the Bose Bluetooth SoundLink III provides a great audio performance. This attribute alone puts it in the running for us as one of the best Bluetooth speakers available.
